Hi Everyone! Jeff from San Jose, CA here.
In Houston, TX.
Hiya! My name is Eric. I'm a classical music nerd and college music professor who also run a podcast called....Heavy Metal 101. Huzzah!
I’m from Venezuela, currently living in Somerville, MA
also very close, in brighton, MA
Im Ryan from the metalverse.
Metaverse just dropped 26% today
Wow, we finally meet the legend!
Feel free to drop and questions here!
Heavy Metal 101 origin story.
How many were at the second class? :-)
what's your metal journey? how'd you get into metal and how has it evolved?
I've been coming to this since 2017
Palladium still works.
Polar Sparking Water forever
Killswitch Engage plays in Boston on Saturday I think.
Exactly the same thing happened to me. Although in my case it was "Rime of the ancient Mariner" nonstop.
Bruce Dickinson is doing a spoken word tour right now.
Good to maintain the child within - that is your genuine and highest self
He's in Boston on Saturday
Bruce Dickinson is in Boston Saturday, Killswitch Engage on Sunday at House of Blues
It's a tough line to walk haha
I said that earlier in the sessions
Liz, you get full credit for the quote this year lol
mm Swedish sadness
Hi everyone - thank you very much for this beautiful time with you - Jeff thank you for being present - Thank you Joe for continuing this brilliance - I appreciate it and this time - I am going off now - I am glad for this time - Rock on and enjoy the most spectacular time 😁🙌🏽
Don't forget you can always add here! https://padlet.com/joediaz/mitmetal1012022
You are welcome always
Okay great thanks Joe x
Anvil for me
Gotta get into deathcore.
That is my research! Globalization of heavy metal fans from a psychological perspective! I wanna listen it if Jeff will do!
Akemi! You should drop the survey link(s) again
Have you seen Babymetal?
Hey Babymetal is great! :D
Here is my survey URL of my research. https://survey.worthmine.comPlease participate mine if you have time :)
Texas isn't San Jose. It would be a multimillion house in California.
For all of you, is Baby Metal one of Heavy Metal Music? I am very interesting about that.
Akemi, yes in my book
Babymetal is the best metal band of all time.
...how is this the first Kerry King quote in this course?... LOL
Lol, check the recordings, Hell :D
Kerry King is jealous of Joe's hair.
Very Interesting. Japanese have different views towards them. It is kind like diversity towards determination factor to choose music. Perhaps, westerners prioritize sounds, rhythm when they choose music. This is my research in 2022.
We don't talk about that
So cool! I'd read that study!
This is an interesting metric lol
I feel the same way about Ghost
Feel free to drop any other questions!
Ship of Theseus...
the metal version of the ship of theseus
ah beat me to it
Hahaha, same wavelength Sym
There's a band named Hoth that is real good.
how involved with your local scenes are you as time passes and as you move around the country?
The session last year on metal composed by AIs definitely stretched the limit. Anything new on that front?
as someone who is pretty interested in electronic and generative music, trust me when i say that all of those concerns are very much addressed! it surprised me too :)
I'd argue that music is sound organized in time, whether a composer organizes it or a computer. :)
Very true, but what’s the inspiration behind the art?
It is, if you have an aesthetic experience to the sound of the dog or the jackhammer. It is the organization that makes it music.
Haha, when I run activities about music and sonic art, it always ends up here. I love it
Noise is unwanted sound, but as long as someone "wants it" it is music.
not related to metal, but there’s a lot of skill and effort that goes into electronic music. a big part of it is essentially composing. just like Bach or Mozart wrote music for others to play, EDM producers write music for a computer to play. i’ve watch my brother work on music before, he manually manipulates sine waves by changing the shape of the harmonics to make sounds completely from scratch that haven’t existed before. it’s fascinating
Totally agree Sym! Almost a completely different skill set in many ways! Still music
We had to study electronic synthesis when I was a composition undergrad. A different skill set indeed (but definitely related).
there's also a whole cultural issue of how things get disseminated, sadly
there isn't a 'canon' to refer to now, as much as there was in the 80s/90s
Can anyone suggest a "great" deathcore band? I have yet to find one I like.
Carnifex, Lorna Shore, Thy Art is Murder
Awesome. Thanks! Will look into them.
New Korn is really good.
i feel like metalcore gets a bad rap because of a few bands in particular who are super cringe-y, but metalcore as a whole actually has as nearly as many subgenres as metal, and a lot of them sound almost nothing like each other. there’s some really amazing, powerful, raw, heavy stuff out there in the genre, something for everyone. i didn’t get into metalcore until my early 20s, and i’m so glad i discovered
I mean, Converge is like the best band ever, and they are essentially metalcore.
Converge is also a local band!! (to the boston area, i mean)
There's a lot of good Christian metalcore. It's like a thing.
i like progressive metalcore
News just in - Jeff Pearlin starts local Metal Night in San Jose
I was a NWBHM and power metal person, but I've been discovering a lot of new Symphonic Metal stuff
Sounds like a neighborhood primed for disaffected youths to be introduced to metal
maybe a new Metal 101 west coast
Hell yeah Fabio!
I need to run and feed my family dinner, but thanks so much to Joe and Jeff for this. Big, big fun! 🖤
This has been part of my life for 5 years. Thanks for starting it!
thank you so much Jeff!! so exciting to finally meet the legend
Thanks Jeff! OG.
To close, Jeff should play his favorite song
this was a great way to start the year, thanks!
Joe, you are the best with all of classes! It is sad for me to not chat with people because of time difference.
while it plays we can debate DiAnno or Dickenson
Gotta head out & go home. Thanks everyone for another year of great lectures :,) You all rule so hard. Hope I get to come back next year.
I mean, are we going to debate Murray v. Smith?!? Can’t be done.
@CHROSTOPHER it is very impressive for me to see your attitudes towards searching things as a researcher. It will be one of my treasures in my research life! Thanks a lot!
The trve debates begin
thank you so much Joe for another incredible year
Just imagine being on stage having to windmill your Viking hair and beard.
i look forward to this every year
thank you all, you’re awesome!

Thanks for another class year \m/
does Maiden really need 3 guitarists? or 2 + a ballet dancer?
I will finish the survey before the music finishes
I saw Bruce Dickinson strip down to his underpants in NYC once.
Haha hope to do this all with you soon
Haha, I hope you got a pair
That was most totally excellent, Joe! Thank you!!
...always leave them wanting more...
I have done the survey :)
