Claudia Urrea
09:48
Claudia, coming from the Boston area. This is my first class this year. I came to a class in 2020
Colin Brumley
09:52
Loved Kelly’s. It was a perfect supplement to a lot of the theory I did in mine
Sebastian Castro
10:13
Favorite classes? Music theory and guitar classes. I still have to watch the prog class from earlier this week which I assume will be a 3rd favorite too!
Ana Maria Velasquez Giraldo
10:29
Hi. I am Ana from Colombia, but currently in Columbus, OH. I have enjoyed all the classes, but Kelly's on Progressive was awesome!
Colin Jenkins
10:43
Loved Kelly’s class, & also really loved Paul’s class on story building & promotion. \m/
sym (they/them)
10:44
Kelly’s was my favorite
Kelly Phillips
11:01

Daniel Toner
11:54
Dan from Somerville: This has been one of the best courses I have ever taken!
Sebastian Castro

Liz Surette
12:37
How did I miss the Pokemon thing???
Liz Surette
12:52
Haha cool
Kelly Phillips
13:32
Liz, I think you were in the prog class? I made a halfassed metaphor about prog metal being like Pokemon types but the attached meme is so much better lol
sym (they/them)
14:36
Matt <3
Kelly Phillips
18:12
making me sad cause the first show personally I had a ticket to that was cancelled due to COVID was Fleshed Apocalypse :(
sym (they/them)
19:25

Kim M
19:33
^Same - wanted to see them in Brooklyn
Sebastian Castro
20:30

Kelly Phillips
22:10

Colin Jenkins
23:02
the operatic choir for sure
sym (they/them)
23:22
the outfits seem like something between professional choir attire and “alternative” fashion
sym (they/them)
25:28
does he teach an IAP class?
Kelly Phillips
25:35
hell yeah, great genre
Viktor Simjanoski
25:55
yes, I'm all ears :)
Sebastian Castro
27:30
Agree -- great genres. I made a small sample playlist of this stuff last year for those interested: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7y4AN3AXarp8iOaTaF6Ozh

Meaghan T'ao

Kelly Phillips
31:17
I brought down my battle vest with a Neurosis back patch for show and tell after the lecture haha
sym (they/them)
31:37
are the entire 12 minutes of the song that slow?
Akshay Kothakonda
32:08
this album in particular is very hardcore inspired
Meaghan T'ao
32:53
oh boy oh boy
Sebastian Castro
32:56

Katie Means

Akshay Kothakonda
33:06
I don't care who knows I love this album
Trevor Stricker
33:31
Oh I listened to it a while ago. Didn't understand the kerfuffle.
Kelly Phillips
33:50
good old gatekeeping black metal nerds
Trevor Stricker
34:06
If Rolling Stone has been writing off Iron Maiden for >30 years then who cares what they say?
Akshay Kothakonda
34:06
they obviously haven't listened to new dimmu borgir
Kelly Phillips
34:52
Black metal is just surf rock with blast beats, should be the last people getting huffy about genre classification
Meaghan T'ao
34:59
^
Joe Diaz
35:07
Hahaha to all of the above
Akshay Kothakonda
35:12
grainy quality of audio over zoom really gives it the trve kvlt black metal feel
Meaghan T'ao
35:17
ur 100% right it's just angry surf rock
Kelly Phillips
35:22
Akshay lol
Kelly Phillips
35:36
“if it didn’t sound like it was recorded in a Norwegian janitor’s closet, I don’t want to hear it”
Meaghan T'ao
35:49

Meaghan T'ao
35:57
yes, yes it is bm
Trevor Stricker
36:01
Or a Finnish Sauna?
Meaghan T'ao
36:34
trem picking, blast beats and vox clearly there
Mitchell Kaplan
36:35
The singing style contrasts greatly with the music
Meaghan T'ao
37:22
major key + pink cover
Meaghan T'ao
37:26
that's what pissed people off
Sebastian Castro
37:49
the pink reminds me of this great troll band: https://www.civicwebmedia.com.au/logo-inspiration-from-death-metal-band-party-cannon/
sym (they/them)
38:16
unrelated question, i’m trying to understand how was the previous album hardcore-influenced? as someone loves hardcore and listens to a lot, 2 of the major characteristics of hardcore are short (~2 minutes) songs and super fast tempo, and that song was 12 minutes and very slow tempo
Meaghan T'ao
38:52
all of these are really good
Kelly Phillips
39:01
Mouth of the Architect SUPER underrated
Akshay Kothakonda
39:09
I think I heard in an interview Neurosis were inspired by the 'repetetive' nature of their riffs.
Sebastian Castro
39:13
Inter Arma -- one of my favorite bands ever. Highly recommended
Meaghan T'ao
39:26
except for post-gummi solstafir lmao
Akshay Kothakonda
39:37
I miss gummi
sym (they/them)
39:40

Kelly Phillips

Trevor Stricker
42:29
Same question as Kelly
Kelly Phillips
42:37

Kelly Phillips
48:09
come guys this is just a zither
sym (they/them)
48:35
what’s next, doritos guitar?
Trevor Stricker
48:37
"just a zither" makes it seem like it's a common thing I've got leaning against my wall :)
sym (they/them)
51:09

Meaghan T'ao
51:19

Kim M
52:39

Kelly Phillips
52:43

Meaghan T'ao
53:20
Russian or polish arkona
Kim M
53:22

Kelly Phillips
53:22

56:22
Panopticon appears to have a lot of albums, which one do you recommend starting with?
Meaghan T'ao
56:23
i'm posting in the padlet dw!
Meaghan T'ao
56:33
depends on what you want to hear from them sym!
Meaghan T'ao
56:48
i'd say Kentucky because of the interesting genre blend
Meaghan T'ao
57:05
the new double album is also really good, it's half atmoblack half neofolk
sym (they/them)
57:09
thanks Meaghan!
Meaghan T'ao

Katie Means
01:00:02
So excited. Thank you
Sebastian Castro
01:00:02
I watched a Heilung performance on YouTube last year and time went by very quickly. It's very immersive.
Kelly Phillips
01:00:11
Oh Meaghan don’t tempt me, I have like 80 on my public list on Spotify hahaha
Kelly Phillips
01:00:14
it’s my hobby
Trevor Stricker
01:00:18
Who's blood is on the drum...?
Kelly Phillips
01:00:54
here’s my public Spotify profile, just easier to link this and then you can navigate to my public lists: https://open.spotify.com/user/caviesfan79?si=Sww0PRldTF6H91LZiR3yZg
Kelly Phillips
01:01:36
I think seeing a band like this live would send me to another plane of existence
Sebastian Castro
01:01:47
thanks for sharing!
Kelly Phillips
01:01:53
:)
Viktor Simjanoski
01:02:10
if I saw this before turning 7 or 8 years old I'd have nightmares for the rest of my life :)
Meaghan T'ao
01:02:23
lol Kelly yeah that's probably easier
Mitchell Kaplan
01:02:47
I’m Mitch, here because I’m friends with Trevor (Stricker). Really only listened to a smattering of metal since my teen Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax/Metal Church/Maiden/Sabbath/Testament/Helloween/Overkill/Priest etc days
Meaghan T'ao
01:03:02
here's mine https://open.spotify.com/user/1279022819
Thom Albarn
01:03:24
might be a stupid question but I’m wondering: what makes heilung metal and not just folk music?
Meaghan T'ao
01:03:51
their proximity to the scene imo
Akshay Kothakonda
01:04:00
A little tangential as this is not metal, mostly just Nordic folk, but Wardruna is really good.
Meaghan T'ao
01:04:01
there's a lot of folk metal/neofolk fan crossover
Meaghan T'ao
01:04:06
inb4 wardruna
Kelly Phillips
01:04:13
Suldusk is a great example
Mitchell Kaplan
01:04:15
The things I listened since then: The Gathering/Moonspell/In Flames/DragonForce
Kelly Phillips
01:04:16
or Sylvaine
Meaghan T'ao
01:04:18
lmao akshay and I have to stop echoing each other
Akshay Kothakonda
01:04:24
oohh Suldusk is really good too
Meaghan T'ao
01:04:30
suldusk good
Meaghan T'ao
01:04:42
like half of atmospheric black metal is folk-influenced
Mitchell Kaplan
01:05:13
I could be forgetting things but that’s likely most of it. I’m not including anything I would consider hard rock rather than metal
Meaghan T'ao
01:05:31
thy catafalque is an interesting one
Kelly Phillips
01:05:36
oh hell yeah
Liz Surette
01:05:37
These questions can be nebulous. Is accoustic black metal actually black metal? Ihsahn says black metal is about lyrics and attitude. Chronos says only Venom are black metal. And there is every opinion in between.
Meaghan T'ao
01:05:37
with pretty clear folk and metal elements imo
Thom Albarn
01:05:39
oh wow that’s really interesting, thanks!
Kelly Phillips
01:05:41
def leans into that avant-garde realm
Meaghan T'ao
01:05:47
embersolyom is the song, it's a cover of a Hungarian folk song
Akshay Kothakonda
01:06:16
good point Liz
Meaghan T'ao
01:06:21
case by case basis, @liz I think
Kelly Phillips
01:06:49
that’s a great question Liz, I feel like Ihsahn is hitting the right note though it sure feels like I need lo-fi and blast beats in order to hit on black metal, personally
Meaghan T'ao
01:06:53
lemme find the band
Meaghan T'ao
01:07:22
there's an ongoing argument about that joe :)
Sebastian Castro
01:07:24
so Periphery's Blood Eagle is viking metal! Cool
Meaghan T'ao
01:07:56
le chants du hazard (orchestral instrumentation only but self-identified as black metal)
Mitchell Kaplan
01:08:00
ofncourse
Meaghan T'ao
01:08:00
going to link that in the pad as well
Akshay Kothakonda
01:08:04
I think metal genre should be about the sound and not the lyrics, so imho 'Viking metal' shouldn't be a thing
Kelly Phillips
01:08:17
Sebastian, hahaha that’s a new perspective I’d not thought of
Meaghan T'ao
01:08:30
Viking metal in the "purist" sense of definition is a super narrow subgenre
Meaghan T'ao
01:08:48
if we're talking bathory, falkenbach etc
Trevor Stricker
01:08:50
Diamonds & Rust by Judas Priest is a Joan Baez cover. Blew my mind when I learned that.
Meaghan T'ao
01:09:27
hahaha
sym (they/them)
01:09:45
pre-covid, my mom was in a chorus that did a choral arrangement of (specifically) Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence
Akshay Kothakonda
01:09:59
Meaghan funny we don't think of Bathory as Viking metal but do for 'melodeath' bands like amon amarth.
Meaghan T'ao
01:10:08
it's Deep Purple vs Blackmore's night all over again
sym (they/them)
01:10:25
are we going to talk about Queen Boudicca?? (idk spelling)
Meaghan T'ao
01:10:33
that's the thing with folk metal though
Meaghan T'ao
01:10:55
so often it's *insert country* folk mixed with *insert metal genre*
Kelly Phillips
01:10:56
they have the same beard almost
Sebastian Castro
01:10:57
soul patch required.
Akshay Kothakonda
01:11:21
good point Meaghan
Kelly Phillips
01:11:59
oh my god I’m an idiot I NEVER noticed until right now that the album over has that winding path, just diagonally
Meaghan T'ao
01:12:07
hahaha
Trevor Stricker
01:12:41
This sounds like a metal band from the shire
Akshay Kothakonda
01:12:49
lol
Meaghan T'ao
01:13:01
oh no, don't let the black metal/dungeon synth nerds hear you
Mitchell Kaplan
01:13:09
extremely Irish of course
sym (they/them)
01:13:22
i feel like i’m missing a reference here?
Meaghan T'ao
01:13:57
oh yeah I should link obsequiae too
Mitchell Kaplan
01:14:29
wow, I’m dumbstruck. nice job adapting that Ayreon
Akshay Kothakonda
01:14:29
oh boy
Kelly Phillips
01:15:57
okay but that bass tone slaps
Meaghan T'ao
01:16:07
+1 to whoever posted ulvesang
Trevor Stricker
01:16:10

Kelly Phillips
01:16:11

Trevor Stricker
01:16:17
You know... Nice bass
sym (they/them)
01:16:37
incredible
Meaghan T'ao
01:16:42
oh there's also that reddit song listing every single traditional folk tune eluveitie covered
Meaghan T'ao
01:16:45
let me find that for padlet
Trevor Stricker
01:16:48
There's a death metal Bee Gees cover band locally
Kim M
01:17:00
so speaking of Fleshgod….they just put out a new song that randomly had some Oops I did it again lyrics in it??? it threw me off lol
Mitchell Kaplan
01:17:08
I just thought of that Trevor. Tragedy
Trevor Stricker
01:17:24
Yes! Saw them live. Got tired of the schtick. :P
Akshay Kothakonda
01:18:21
Re Baby Metal, any band that's good with Rob Halford is good with me
Trevor Stricker
01:18:38
Ashkay what's that? Halford's talked about them?
Meaghan T'ao
01:18:46
yeah halford defended them
Meaghan T'ao
01:18:56
bc people were being angry at tiny cute Asian girls I guess
Meaghan T'ao
01:18:57
lol
Akshay Kothakonda
01:18:57
and they toured with priest?
Trevor Stricker
01:18:59
He's pretty vocal... err... has lots of opinions. I can see that
Meaghan T'ao
01:19:06
the debate rages on
Meaghan T'ao
01:19:15
they've toured with a lot of people
Kelly Phillips
01:19:29
Senri Kawaguchi would like words with these people
Kim M
01:19:51

Akshay Kothakonda
01:20:36
she has a bunch of weird youtube videos
Mitchell Kaplan
01:20:50
No! but I’m open to exploring all the metal I’ve missed, of course
Kelly Phillips
01:21:10
also can’t recommend highly enough the song STFU! by Rina Sawayama. Pop artist and my album of the year from 2020, it’s a fantastic pop/nu-metal blend
sym (they/them)
01:21:42

Akshay Kothakonda

Trevor Stricker
01:27:39
Acapella but with drums?
Joe Diaz
01:27:49
No click track haha
Mitchell Kaplan
01:28:09
entrepreneurship is incredible sometimes. “There should be a dinosaur metal franchise for kids.” “You’re right there *should* be such a thing.”
Trevor Stricker
01:28:51
Holy shit... now I want to hear their Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner
Meaghan T'ao
01:28:53

Trevor Stricker
01:29:05
wowowowow
sym (they/them)
01:29:10
Joe didn’t you say at the beginning of the course that one of the things that defined metal was the electric guitar… 🤔
Trevor Stricker
01:29:10
Joe I disagree. Got me instantly.
sym (they/them)
01:29:21
that was really cool
Meaghan T'ao

Trevor Stricker
01:31:02
Ozzie -come - Ronald McDonald is kind of ... far out
Kelly Phillips
01:31:09
that Grimace is what my sleep paralysis demon looks like
Thom Albarn
01:31:11
Oh my god this is excellent
sym (they/them)
01:31:22
this is making me so uncomfortable
Trevor Stricker
01:31:24
It's helped by the fact that they truly don't suck. But... the schtick is heavy.
Trevor Stricker
01:31:52
