Beyond human-centered: How design can take responsibility for its impact.
The tech industry must design more responsibly. As we see technology give rise to digital addiction, algorithmic biases, a surveillance economy, and the spread of disinformation, it’s never been more critical for companies to look beyond their user to the broader consequences of the products they create. At my firm – the strategy and design consultancy Artefact – we’ve been asking ourselves how we can do better. How can companies gain a deeper understanding of the problems we are trying to solve, the systems that they are inextricably linked to, and the impact of our solutions? In this talk, I discuss our approach to augmenting human-centered design and its related disciplines of psychology, behavioral science, and anthropology.
